I don’t go “out out” very often, so when I do, I like to go all out with my makeup. I never used to do anything special, but since getting better at doing my makeup, I go that little bit extra when it comes to special occasions. So today, I’ve decided to share a few of my going out makeup essentials. If you’re a regular reader, you may find there’s a bit of a crossover with a previous post, where I talk about my everyday makeup products – some of which I combine here.
Just FYI, I do not receive any commission from the links in this post. All products mentioned I have chosen myself and bought with my own money.
Just to avoid getting too repetitive, I’m going to list the everyday products I use that are also part of my going out makeup routine.
- Foundation: NYX Cosmetics Can’t Stop Won’t Stop 24 Hour Foundation in Light Porcelain
- Concealer: NARS Cosmetics Soft Matte Concealer in Chantilly – although I’ve currently ran out.
- Blusher: Barry M Blusher Quad Palette
- Mascara: Maxfactor 2000 Calorie Waterproof Mascara
I always tend to use primer if I’m doing night out makeup. Purely because it gives it a better finish, and it helps the makeup to stay put, which is handy if I’m going out somewhere where I’ll be getting hot. No one likes a sweaty night club face, am I right? I generally tend to buy what’s on offer, but recently I’ve been using Rimmel Fix & Perfect Pro Primer. It’s a great price, and it works really well at giving a nice, smooth finish.
In addition to my failsafe NARS concealer, I go a little more heavy with it on a night out. I’ve found recently that the Barry M Colour Correcting Kit works really well at evening out my skin tone. The orange works well at covering up any dark circles under my eyes and the green is great for neutralising any redness coming from my constant supply of acne.
A key feature of my going out makeup routine is eye makeup. Normally, I’ll just go with a bit of mascara and be done with it, but when it comes to a night out, I’ll put in a little more effort. I have two firm favourites to choose from when it comes to my night out makeup, depending on the occasion. My go to is the Barry M Meteor Storm palette. It has 8 duochrome shades of high pigmented hues, and it’s just gorgeous. You can use each colour separately, or if you’re feeling extra fancy you can layer them up or blend them to your heart’s content. Each colour is super sparkly without going too over the top, so it’s perfect for adding a little something extra to your eye makeup. My other favourite is the NYX Sprinkle Town Cream Glitter Palette. It’s more glitzy and intense in terms of colour, but that makes it perfect for parties and for the festive season.
I’ve recently got into doing my eyebrows as part of my daily makeup routine, so it of course has become part of my night out makeup routine. Being ridiculously pale and having mousey coloured hair, it was quite difficult to find the right shade. But thankfully, after a bit of research I’ve started to use Rimmel’s Brow This Way Sculpting Kit. I went for the medium brown shade which seems to work nicely. You just apply the wax first and set it with the powder. It takes a bit of practice to get a neat finish, but once you’ve got the knack you’ll be all set. The kit comes with a little brush for application but with my clumsy fingers I struggled a bit to use it, so I invested in a special eyebrow shaping brush which makes it a lot easier to apply. I’m impressed with how long it lasts, and it’s also nice and light.
I love the Barry M lip paints, especially the colour changing ones. If you haven’t heard of their Colour Changing Lip Paint range, they react to the Alkaline in your lips, creating a completely unique shade. Depending on what I’m wearing and how I’ve done my eye makeup, I’ll go for either the Genie or Unicorn shades. They’re such a good price at under a fiver each, and the colour lasts really well. I’ve also discovered NYX Cosmetics’ Velvet Matte Lipstick too. Sometimes I’ll do a red lip if I’m feeling extra brave, and this works really well – it lasts for ages, and the colour is BEAUT.
If you want to add a little extra sparkle to your look, the Barry M Liquid Glitter Sparkle Drops do the job nicely. Their site advises you can add a few drops into your moisturiser for a little extra glow, but personally I like to just dab a tiny bit on the outside of my eyelids for some extra shimmer. I’ll then finish off with a spritz of NYX Matte Makeup Setting Spray to fix everything in place and stop my face from going shiny.
