Craft Gin Club Subscription Box Review | May 2020

Craft Gin Club Box - May 2020

Some of you may be surprised to know that I love gin. Jks. I’m sure it’s common knowledge on my blog by now that I essentially have gin pumping through my veins. I only discovered it about two years ago but since then it has become my tipple of choice and I’ve had many horrific hangovers from it.

So, in January this year, I decided to treat myself to a subscription to Craft Gin Club. I’d never considered a gin club subscription before, but my Mother in Law has been a member of this one for a while, and as a result accumulated a craft gin collection that I’ve been in awe of. Every time we’ve gone over there for dinner she’s poured me a glass of her craft gin of the month and there have been some absolute crackers. So, for a little post-Christmas treat this year, I decided to become a Craft Gin Club member myself.

So, what’s Craft Gin Club all about? Well, quite simply, it’s the UK’s top subscription for gin lovers. Every month, members receive a box full of goodies – the main feature being a full sized bottle of craft gin. With it, you also get an expertly matched selection of snacks, mixers and everything you need to make the perfect cocktail with your craft gin too, along with a copy of their monthly Ginned! Magazine, packed with gin inspired features, recipes and more.

I’ve been a member of Craft Gin Club for while now, so I thought it might be a nice idea to review my monthly boxes. I’m going to kick things off with the May box, which was inspired by the sunshiney vibes of the Mediterranean.

La Distillerie De Monaco Gin Aux Agrumes

May’s gin was an exclusive that was crafted in Monaco’s first ever gin distillery, featuring a whole array of citrussy flavours. It’s a blend of locally sourced citrus fruits including bitter orange, sweet orange, grapefruit, bergamot and citron, that’s brought together with juniper berries, warm ginger and Szechuan pepper.

I’m quite the fan of citrus flavours so when I saw that this gin was packed with them I couldn’t wait to try it. It certainly didn’t disappoint! The initial scent is lovely and fresh and really gives off a summery vibe, while the taste of the gin itself is really refreshing.

Tonica Polara

Every month you’ll also be sent a specially selected tonic to pair with your gin, and for May, I received Tonica Polara, which comes from the isle of Sicily and is made with high quality quinine. Matched with the La Distillerie De Monaco Gin, the orange citrus flavours are complemented by the bitterness of the tonic, making it a rather refreshing G&T for a summer evening. Finish it off with the orange slices and juniper berries to garnish and you’re all set!

Martini Fiero

This month’s box also had a miniature bottle of Martini Fiero – an Italian tipple made which has rich, citrus and herb flavours. I’m not particularly a fan of vermouth so I didn’t have high hopes for this, but I decided to give it a go with tonic, which is what the magazine suggested. Unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me – it was far too bitter and it sort of reminded me a bit of cough syrup! I don’t like to waste booze, but sadly, this one had to go down the sink.

Snacks

The selection of snacks that came in this month’s box really fit the theme well, although at the time of writing I haven’t got round to eating many of them yet! I’ve eaten the madeleine which was really tasty – it was lovely and light and the vanilla flavour was just enough without being overpowering. The only thing I’m not going to be eating anytime soon is the olives, purely because I’m not a fan. However, they’ll be going straight into my snack cupboard for future guests. Lets just say there’ll be plenty of snack selection at our housewarming party – a) if we ever get to move into our new house and b) if we’re ever allowed gatherings with our loved ones again.

The Cocktail: Race Car

Inspired by Monaco’s racing heritage, the Race Car cocktail makes use of the Spuma Polara mixer, which is wonderfully sweet and packed with flavours of rhubarb, orange and herb, with notes of rich caramel. The Race Car syrup smells fresh and fruity, so it works incredibly well combined with the gin and the Spuma Polara. Finished off with the orange slices and juniper berry garnish, the Race Car is a lovely accompaniment to a summer evening! I really loved the citrusy flavours and the sweetness of this cocktail, and it definitely reminded me of a summer holiday – not that we’ll be getting one of those anytime soon, but we can certainly dream.

Final Thoughts

May’s craft gin box certainly didn’t disappoint! Citrusy flavours are one of my favourites so I had high hopes for this box from the get-go. I’ll be honest, on the snacks side, I wasn’t as impressed as I have been in previous months, but there was still quite a nice variety, and the cocktail recipe and the gin itself made up for it. I’m already looking forward to my June box delivery!

Overall Rating for May’s Box: 7/10

  1. I’ve thought about gin clubs too but they always seem rather expensive. Plus I have a decent stock of home made fruit gins. Good to read some feedback, maybe it’s an idea for my birthday in a couple of months.

    1. I must admit, I was a little put off by the price to start with but I managed to find a 50% off code for your first box so I thought I’d treat myself! I would definitely try at least one or two boxes and see what you think 🙂 x

  2. A GIN MONTJLY SUBSCRIPTION?! Aw man I wish so badly it’d ship to NZ. Like you, I also only discovered it about 2 years ago. But it was the clwsic Bombay Saphire, which I later learnt there is much better out there! So far my favs are the Scapegrace Black Label (I think it’s made in NZ? It’s black when you pour it and when you add tonic it turns pink!) And the purple bottle of Hendrix. Oh man. So good. The pink Beef Eater one is also pretty good.

Looking forward to your next gin update! I wonder if j can get these bottles in NZ? Would love to try more craft gin!

    1. It’s definitely worth looking into! I love the classic Bombay Sapphire! The Scapegrace Black Label sounds amazing too – I don’t think they do it here in the UK but I will definitely keep an eye out for it! Hendricks is probably my favourite gin but I haven’t actually tried the purple one so I will have to give it a go at some point! Glad you enjoyed – I would definitely see if you can find some sort of gin subscription in NZ! I’m not sure if CGC ship to NZ but it’s worth having a look! 🙂 Thank you for reading xx

  3. I love how there are pretty much subscription boxes for anything nowadays!! This one looks pretty great, I wouldn’t say Gin is my favourite but I do drink it if I am out in bars etc (well before lockdown)! Plus it’s great that they send you a full bottle and then bits extra to make your own cocktails, how great! thanks for the review xxx

    1. Haha me too! In the beginning I had no idea they sent you a full sized bottle until my mother in law told me so I think when you consider the price of a rare gin it’s pretty good value! Thanks for reading 🙂 x

  4. I love love love the sound of this! I’m not very adventurous with buying new gins so this seems like the perfect excuse. I might add it to my birthday list 😆 Thanks for sharing and enjoy your gin! xx
