Some of you may be surprised to know that I love gin. Jks. I’m sure it’s common knowledge on my blog by now that I essentially have gin pumping through my veins. I only discovered it about two years ago but since then it has become my tipple of choice and I’ve had many horrific hangovers from it.
So, in January this year, I decided to treat myself to a subscription to Craft Gin Club. I’d never considered a gin club subscription before, but my Mother in Law has been a member of this one for a while, and as a result accumulated a craft gin collection that I’ve been in awe of. Every time we’ve gone over there for dinner she’s poured me a glass of her craft gin of the month and there have been some absolute crackers. So, for a little post-Christmas treat this year, I decided to become a Craft Gin Club member myself.
So, what’s Craft Gin Club all about? Well, quite simply, it’s the UK’s top subscription for gin lovers. Every month, members receive a box full of goodies – the main feature being a full sized bottle of craft gin. With it, you also get an expertly matched selection of snacks, mixers and everything you need to make the perfect cocktail with your craft gin too, along with a copy of their monthly Ginned! Magazine, packed with gin inspired features, recipes and more.
I’ve been a member of Craft Gin Club for while now, so I thought it might be a nice idea to review my monthly boxes. I’m going to kick things off with the May box, which was inspired by the sunshiney vibes of the Mediterranean.
Disclaimer: I am not an affiliate for Craft Gin Club, and have not been compensated in any way for this post. My gin subscription is ordered and paid for out of my own money and all opinions are my own.

La Distillerie De Monaco Gin Aux Agrumes
May’s gin was an exclusive that was crafted in Monaco’s first ever gin distillery, featuring a whole array of citrussy flavours. It’s a blend of locally sourced citrus fruits including bitter orange, sweet orange, grapefruit, bergamot and citron, that’s brought together with juniper berries, warm ginger and Szechuan pepper.
I’m quite the fan of citrus flavours so when I saw that this gin was packed with them I couldn’t wait to try it. It certainly didn’t disappoint! The initial scent is lovely and fresh and really gives off a summery vibe, while the taste of the gin itself is really refreshing.
Every month you’ll also be sent a specially selected tonic to pair with your gin, and for May, I received Tonica Polara, which comes from the isle of Sicily and is made with high quality quinine. Matched with the La Distillerie De Monaco Gin, the orange citrus flavours are complemented by the bitterness of the tonic, making it a rather refreshing G&T for a summer evening. Finish it off with the orange slices and juniper berries to garnish and you’re all set!
This month’s box also had a miniature bottle of Martini Fiero – an Italian tipple made which has rich, citrus and herb flavours. I’m not particularly a fan of vermouth so I didn’t have high hopes for this, but I decided to give it a go with tonic, which is what the magazine suggested. Unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me – it was far too bitter and it sort of reminded me a bit of cough syrup! I don’t like to waste booze, but sadly, this one had to go down the sink.
The selection of snacks that came in this month’s box really fit the theme well, although at the time of writing I haven’t got round to eating many of them yet! I’ve eaten the madeleine which was really tasty – it was lovely and light and the vanilla flavour was just enough without being overpowering. The only thing I’m not going to be eating anytime soon is the olives, purely because I’m not a fan. However, they’ll be going straight into my snack cupboard for future guests. Lets just say there’ll be plenty of snack selection at our housewarming party – a) if we ever get to move into our new house and b) if we’re ever allowed gatherings with our loved ones again.
The Cocktail: Race Car
Inspired by Monaco’s racing heritage, the Race Car cocktail makes use of the Spuma Polara mixer, which is wonderfully sweet and packed with flavours of rhubarb, orange and herb, with notes of rich caramel. The Race Car syrup smells fresh and fruity, so it works incredibly well combined with the gin and the Spuma Polara. Finished off with the orange slices and juniper berry garnish, the Race Car is a lovely accompaniment to a summer evening! I really loved the citrusy flavours and the sweetness of this cocktail, and it definitely reminded me of a summer holiday – not that we’ll be getting one of those anytime soon, but we can certainly dream.
May’s craft gin box certainly didn’t disappoint! Citrusy flavours are one of my favourites so I had high hopes for this box from the get-go. I’ll be honest, on the snacks side, I wasn’t as impressed as I have been in previous months, but there was still quite a nice variety, and the cocktail recipe and the gin itself made up for it. I’m already looking forward to my June box delivery!
Overall Rating for May’s Box: 7/10
